“Color Wars” by Derrick Caldwell

ANYONE CAN PHOTOGRAPH A NUDE MODEL, BUT CAN THEY DO SO ARTISTICALLY? THIS IS ONE OF THE QUESTIONS I ASK MYSELF AND CHALLENGE MYSELF WITH AS A PHOTOGRAPHER. FOR THIS SHOOT, I WANTED TO UTILIZE THE POWER AND VERSATILITY OF FLASH GELS. EACH AND EVERY SHADE OF A FLASH GEL IMPOSES A DIFFERENT MOOD ONTO THE PHOTOGRAPH. I ALSO WANTED MY MODEL TO DO MORE ABSTRACT AND UNCONVENTIONAL POSES. ADDITIONALLY, I PLAYED AROUND WITH MY CAMERA ANGLES: SHOOTING UP, SHOOTING DOWN, AND SHOOTING FROM AFAR TO GET MORE OF THE SCENE TO TELL THE STORY. IT ENDED UP COMING TOGETHER VERY NICELY. AS YOU MIGHT NOTICE, THE MODEL’S FACE ISN’T SHOWN IN ANY OF THESE PHOTOS. I THOUGHT THIS MIGHT ADD A LITTLE MYSTERY TO THE SET.

WE CAME UP WITH THE TITLE “COLOR WARS” BECAUSE OF THE CONCEPT. IT WAS ACTUALLY MY MODEL WHO CAME UP WITH THE FINAL NAME. I ORIGINALLY WANTED TO NAME IT “PLAYING WITH COLORS”, BUT “COLOR WARS” REALLY CAPTURED THE ESSENCE OF THIS SHOOT. THE COLORS THAT I CHOSE WERE SIMPLY RANDOM AND BY INSTINCT. I JUST THOUGHT OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD WHAT WOULD LOOK GOOD IN THE TYPE OF SETTING WE HAD, AND I KNEW THAT DARK COLORS WOULD ADD MORE DRAMA TO OUR STORY.
